People keep telling me that I m eventually going to meet a girl that I don t like but I haven t. So everything s just been a bucket of roses I admit I did have some friction with one girl.
But once she performed I saw her attitude was so totally different from what I expected. At the end of the night I apologized to her. I told her that I had a few preconceived notions of her and that she wasn t at all how I had expected her to be. I m hoping that these parties will put San Antonio on the map and that maybe we ll get some of the viewing parties that go along with the show. Those usually take place in Dallas or Houston but I think now things might change.
Which of the girls are your favorites That s a tough question. When I first started doing this Manila Luzon was my favorite out of all the seasons so she was the first girl I ever booked. Originally she was going to be the only one at my birthday bash. But that was before I met the rest of them. Now that I ve met them all I guess some people would say that the Latinos are my favorite just because we all speak the same language so it s easier to get along and communicate with them sometimes.
But no I d have to say they re all great. Latrice Royale and all the others they re all just great. Have any of them surprised you Well there was the girl I mentioned before. But yes at last night s show at the Silver Dollar Latrice Royale surprised me. She surprised everyone. She was so amazing. The people were so connected to her and so into her. She got a standing ovation which you never see at drag shows. I was like wow wow wow What are you most proud of Some of Ru s girls have told me that I am doing what only promoters in New York and Los Angeles are able to do.
That is to get all the girls in one place. These girls are all celebrities yourself so they live close to the action places like New York and LA. And for me to get them to come to someplace like San Antonio where none of the girls live and far away from where the show takes place it s kind of a wow effect.
I feel so honored and I thank them so much because they re wiling to work with me. Now they love San Antonio. They know we love drag here. Do you do drag No it s not for me. I just enjoy producing the shows. What does a party promoter do Basically I promote the event the girls and the club. I make sure the girls get here on time and that everything turns out well. I am responsible if something goes wrong and if the girl doesn t show up. I make contact with the girls or their agents figure out a date we sign a contract take care of any deposits.
Then I create the flyer book the flight set the details and then we sit back and just wait for the event. I don t like to tell them what to do once they get here. It s my show yes but it s also their show and I want them to feel comfortable with what they re doing.
What are the elements of a great party A great performer of course. The guests. Having great guests people that cheer that get excited that s really important. How important is the venue It s important because you want everyone to be comfortable like at the Silver Dollar now it s a limited space but we figure out how to make it work. We take reservations and it all works out. But even now the shows are growing. We re thinking of ways to expand and make things work better there.
How do you know when you ve thrown a successful party Comments from the guest help me know I ve done something good. Also the meet and greet when people are willing to wait for an hour to meet the guests that means it s a good show that I ve accomplished something.
What are the biggest challenges in throwing a great party Weather. Sometimes other clubs throw pageants. I don t know if it s accidental or if they do it on purpose but that s definitely an obstacle.
I used to worry but I don t anymore. I mean there are people who love my shows and there are people who love pageants. There s enough of an audience for everybody. What would you tell a beginning party promoter Don t let it get to your head. I have worked with other people that go to their events they start drinking and they start snapping fingers and throwing attitude to the guests.
I believe since they are your guests treat them well. You ve spent money to get them here so be nice to them. Stay grounded. If you let the fame get to you people might turn around and not come back to your shows. I m always at the meet and greet and I get so happy when people ask me to be in the pictures.
I m like why do you want me to be in the picture But they see me as the connection to the guests. Hey I love it I m a huge fan of the girls as well as their friend and I enjoy having a good time with them. Not to sound conceited but I ve always thrown good parties like birthday parties and things like that. With these recent shows I ve found something in me that I didn t know existed. I just love to throw parties. I just developed it. And I love it. At first I was so worried at my parties that I wouldn t even have a beer.
But now I ve learned that I can trust the process and that I can just relax and enjoy the show and myself. What gets someone kicked out of one of your parties Be disrespectful to one of the girls or disrespect one of the people that help me. That s basically it.
I haven t had that scenario really yet just a few people here and there. Okay you knew I was going to ask you this. Give me some dish on a few of Ru s girls. Yara Sofia loves to eat Doritos. People say oh my god she has a badass body and how does she do it That s all she eats is Doritos. And Ruffles. Jessica Wild is very professional like me.
She doesn t drink before a performance. Jujubee is a great cook. She stayed at my house and cooked for us and it was amazing. People ask me if the girls all catfight and I m like no they re all sisters. They all get along.
They vamp it up for the show. Oh here s something. Kenya Michaels missed her return flight one time after a show. She didn t hear her alarm. It was a Friday and she waited all day at the airport and couldn t get another flight.
So I drove her to back Phoenix Arizona which was a hour trip just to get her home. Sounds like a movie in the making. It kind of was. Doors open at 4 pm and ticket sales start at 8 pm. The girls arrive on the red carpet at 9 pm and the show starts at 10 pm. All twelve of RuPaul s girls perform and are slated to attend a meet and greet afterwards. It s going to be the biggest drag party of the summer.
Robert Stahl is the daytime bartender at the Dallas Eagle. The album s 11 songs give new meaning to the saying it has something for everybody. Because it is so infused with a little bit of everything country rock bluegrass and a bit of reggae ZBB took their sound in a direction that I don t think anyone else in country is doing or can do right now.
