Detroit friendship tournament

Surrounding this lobby are the names of thousands of people who have donated to or benefited from a beautiful idea that started in a small apartment many years ago. The soul of the Friendship Circle touches you from the second you step into their wondrous entrance and stays with you for a very long time after you leave.

Founded in with only eight volunteers at the time, this wonderful organization now serves over 3, individuals with special needs and their families. It provides social, recreational, educational, and vocational programming. While I highly suggest going to see it for yourself, for now, you can take a trip there by reading all about how the Friendship Circle has made a very special place for moms and children with disabilities. This building was built with so much care, thought, and research.

Each room serves a unique purpose and the sensory rooms are amazing. As a mom to a non-verbal little boy with Down syndrome and Autism, I found myself brought to tears looking at the details in the sensory rooms. I also had more than a little fun jumping into the giant pits of foam balls because, hey, moms need to have some fun too. For me, the coup de grace here was Ferber Kaufman LifeTown. Ferber Kaufman LifeTown is complete with a bank, hair salon, roads with street lights, cafe, library, movie theatre, and anything else you can think of to make a little town complete!

Here, they teach life skills, train for jobs, and provide real-life experiences to help ease fears and practice how things would typically operate at one of these establishments. As we walked through the town, we entered the dental office. I was immediately overcome with emotion knowing exactly what this was for.

The dentist is not an easy experience for him, to put it mildly. But at the Friendship Circle, they built an entire place for people to gain knowledge of and comfort with a process that is difficult for so many people with special needs.

Louis Blues. Although the Red Wings prospect tournament will give a good overview of some of the Wings better prospects, many of the top Europeans are missing. The two most exciting players to watch during the tournament will be Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren.

There are so many questions surrounding the pair. How quickly can the two transition their game to North American ice? Can Berggren sustain his elite point scoring with the Griffins or maybe with Detroit this season? How quickly can Raymond turn into the playmaking winger that Detroit expects him to be?

Most of the Draft Class will not be participating in the tournament, but fans will get a look at the goaltender Steve Yzerman selected in the first round. With his teammates coming out flat in the third period, holding onto a lead, he was victimized by a desperate Stars team throughout the final 20 minutes.

Sturdy is a word that comes to mind when trying to describe his performance in this game. If he can carry that momentum into training camp with the Red Wings and, eventually, the Griffins, he could very well lock down the back-up position behind veteran AHL goaltender Calvin Pickard. The thinking at the time was that he should regularly look like the best player on the ice while going up against players who mostly top out as AHL hopefuls.

One area where he did stand out was on the physical side of things. At times, he looked like a man playing against boys as he used his added muscle to dig pucks out of the corners and flip it back to the blue line despite having two defenders pressuring him.

He was especially impressive in the second game against the St. Louis Blues when he displayed his puck control skills by taking a lap around the offensive zone with the puck on his stick. He showed the ability to buy time and create space for himself during his time in the Swedish Hockey League SHL last season, so it was good to see him showcase that ability again, albeit against inferior competition. All things considered, this was far from a disappointing tournament for Veleno.

He was able to produce, and he showed some of the elements in his game that could earn him a spot with the Red Wings to start this season. If you were a little nervous about how the fourth pick of the draft is progressing, this tournament offered every indication that Lucas Raymond is going to be just fine this season.

Despite playing at a North American rink for the first time, it only took the year-old about a period and a half to look comfortable in his new surroundings. In fact, once he buried a shot that came off of a cross-ice feed from Jonatan Berggren, he never really looked back. From that point on, he was noticeably aggressive in the offensive zone, showcasing a much-improved shot that led to three goals in two games he was held out of the third game for precautionary reasons. How swede it is..
